Security and Suitability

To meet CSE’s security clearance requirements, your time residing outside of Canada must fall within the following criteria:

  • I was outside of Canada on official Government of Canada business/duties (i.e., Government of Canada, Canadian Armed Forces, etc.).
  • I was outside of Canada as a minor, under the age of 18, residing with my parents while they were on official Government of Canada business/duties.
  • I was outside of Canada as a minor, under the age of 18, residing with my parents or other family members for 4 years or less (for reasons other than official Government of Canada business/duties).
  • I was outside of Canada for 4 years or less in the United States, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, a NATO country, or other allied countries studying in college/university.
  • I was outside of Canada for 1 year or less to care for an immediate family member.

You must abstain from illegal drug use (or misuse of prescription drugs) for at least one year ahead of applying to CSE, and at any time during the assessment and clearance process. Any illegal drug use (for example, cocaine, MDMA/Ecstasy, magic mushrooms, etc.) within this timeframe will result in your application being discontinued.

Misuse of prescription drugs means taking a medication in a manner or dose other than prescribed; taking someone else’s prescribed medication, and/or providing prescription drugs to others.

CSE HIRING AND SECURITY PROCESS

Please note that your responses will be used as part of the Communications Security Establishment screening process, which involves competency-based assessments, a security interview, a polygraph test, a psychological assessment, and a background investigation covering a minimum of your last 10 years history, including credit and financial verifications, illegal drugs and misuse of prescription drugs, and any criminal convictions for which you were imprisoned for a term of more than a year. The entire selection process may take over a year. Please be advised that any false or incorrect information in your application will render your application void. We suggest that you review our hiring and security process carefully before submitting your application.

CSE is a separate organization and is not subject to the Public Service Employment Act (PSEA). The organization has its own values-based staffing regime and as such has the flexibility to determine qualifications for positions and how these qualifications will be assessed in a selection process.
